Dr. Nguyen “Tom” Griggs is a native Houstonian, a passionate practitioner and instructor of Japanese Jujitsu, and formerly an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Downtown’s College of Business. Dr. Griggs, or “Sensei Tom”, has applied his vast and varied life experiences as a professional orator, educator and a contributing author to Les Brown’s best-selling book Fight For Your Dreams.
Martial arts has become much more than a hobby, rather a way of life. Tom grew up in rough neighborhoods that exposed him to difficult situations at a young age. As he matured, Tom discovered unresolved issues from childhood that left him a lot of hurt and rage that ultimately became toxic to his health. The meditative practices and calm of traditional martial arts became a means for him to work through and heal those childhood scars. The martial arts became a life-long commitment that continues to be a method to help him temper his anger and teaches him the tenets of the art as they apply more broadly to life.
Dr. Griggs, now Sensei Tom, teaches at TNT Jujitsu and educates kids and adults alike the universal principles of martial arts that can not only be applied to combat, but to the challenges of life as a student, parent, employee or romantic partner. He speaks in schools, community groups and business organizations where his passionate, humorous and insightful programs and workshops have truly touched lives and transformed peoples’ thinking.
Though Tom is a black belt, he has a “white belt state of mind”. He consistently challenges himself and pursues education and personal growth. On his path to greater enlightenment and self discovery, Tom has become a Les Brown Platinum Speaker, a member of John Maxwell’s Founder’s Circle and holds executive certificates from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business in Conflict Resolution and Advanced Negotiations.
